Abstract
A woman's fertility rate begins to decline with age. This decline consists of a reduction in conception rate and an increase in sponataneous abortion rate. IVF offers a unique opportunity to evaluate the effects of age on reproductive efficiency.
In this study, we evaluated the influence of female partner's age on the level of serum basal FSH, serum peak E2 and the numbers of aspirated oocyte transferred embryo and the outcome of IVF-ET.
1,500 cycles of IVF-ET were performed using GnRH agonist long or ultrashort protocol. Patient's average age was 32.9¡¾3.8 years old and divided into 5 age group. Serum basal FSH level was significantly higher in over 40 years old group
(20.4¡¾9.6IU/I)
(p<0.001). Serum peak E2 level was significantly lower in over 40 years old group (1,268.4¡¾834.6pg/ml) (p<0.001). Numbers of aspirated oocyte were lower in over 40 years old group (6.5¡¾4.6) (p<0.05). Numbers of transferred embryo were
significantly
lower in over 40 years old group (3.4¡¾1.8) (p<0.05). Clinical pregnancy rate and ongoing pregnancy rate were decreased as age increases.
These data suggest that older patient presenting to her physician due to infertility should, therefore, undergo an rapid evaluation and active treatment.
